This guy gives ‘having guts’ a whole new meaning. Funk enlisted just six months before the attack on Pearl Harbor brought the USA into the Second World War. Assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, Funk was one of thousands of paratroopers that landed behind enemy lines on D-Day. However, his real moment of bravery didn’t come until 1945, when Funk and paratroopers temporarily under his command overcame a town and took close to a hundred German soldiers captive. While he scouted ahead, Funk left a few men to guard the Germans. When he returned, he found the Germans had overcome his men with their officer yelling at him in German. But what he did next turned the tables and changed history…
